Birding Puerto Rico

Our first day in PR wasn’t too exciting. We got lunch at McDonalds because it was our quickest choice. I ordered a McChicken sandwich. Whatever the fuck that is. Haven’t eaten at McDonald’s in twenty years. Linda had a McBurger. They both came with McFries. It gave me McIndigestion. We got back on the road for our two hour journey south.

Our first birding spot was ok. Got a few birds, but no Puerto Rican Tody. (That’s him in the picture.) That is my Holy Grail bird for the weekend. It was getting late so we continued the drive to our hotel in the seaside village of Parguera. Room was decent. Bed looked soft so I took a leap onto it and probably shattered my tailbone. Headed out to dinner where I ate a big plate of cheesy chicken McNachos and Linda had McFish tacos.

The village was jam packed with people. Come to find out that the “best band” in Puerto Rico is playing there tonight. It was an outdoor concert. At 1am. A block from our hotel. AT 1 A M. Call me a stick in the mud, but here’s the things I like to do at 1am: 1. Sleep. Or 2. Take a nap that lasts seven hours long. We birders don’t party at 1am, we party at 5am.

After dinner, we went back to the room for some shut eye. I find at my age, I need three things for a good nights sleep. A soft bed. (See tailbone comment from earlier), darkness ( we have a porch light that won’t turn off. It’s like the Kenny Rogers Chicken light from Seinfeld) and quiet. At 1am the “Best Band” in PR sounded like they were on our porch. I swear they played that song Olé Olé for an hour and a half.

It’s 3am right now and they stopped an hour ago. Can’t sleep. Maybe it’s the hardening of my arteries keeping me awake. Or the concrete slab I’m sleeping on. Or the Kenny Rogers Chicken light. Doesn’t matter. Gotta get up soon anyway. Hoping for a McTody today. Gonna roll outta here at 530am with the windows down blasting some ABBA. #BirdersStyle. Wake some shit up.
